Dr Parsons has been committed for trial, on a charge of attempting to procure^ abortion. _ Dunedin, Saturday. The Shotover Company has suspended operations, in consequence of the first yield of the month up to the 9th being only 261 ounces. Mr Fish does not stand for Wakatip. The contest is narrowed to Pyke and Innes. The Miners' Association supports the former. A 3.40 this morning a fire originated in the bottling room at Marshall's brewery. The damage is between £900 and £1000. It was insured for £500 in the Australian Alliance. Fifteen hundred people visited the Canary show yesterday. Wanganui, Saturday. Mayor Watt has promised to resign his seat in the Provincial Executive. Great interest is taken in the approaching municipal elections. Messrs Watt, Duthie, Hoolly, Pattoa, and Bamber are candidates. Beef, 16s per lOOlbs ; mutton, 2£d to 2£d per lb. Sunday. A portion of Jackson's wharf fell in with 22 tons of the Go-Ahead's coals. The steamer is consequently detained until Monday. New Plymouth, Sunday. The first sod of the railway will be turned on Thursday next. Several letters have been published in the local newspapers, suggesting that a testimonial should be presented to Mr Kelly, M.H.R., for his exertions in securing the railway. Lyttelton, Saturday. The Phoebe leaves for Port Chalmei-s at two. The brig Princess Alice has cleared for Auckland with 2616 sacks potatoes, 100 bags oats, 480 bags wheat, 39 cases bacon, 1157 sacks potatoes. The James Hannell has cleared for Freemantle, via Newcastle ; and the John Knox, for Sydney, with produce. Grahamstowit, Friday. Gold returns. — Kuranui, for the last fortnight, 135 ounces ; Golden Crown, 38 ounces. The share market is dull, and there is little doing. Caledonians, £20.
