"VERY HARD LINES."

TO THB EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. Sir, — Under the above heading appears a letter in your paper of this morning, which I shall not notice further than to state that your correspondent "Mechanic" must entertain extraordinary notions of civility and truth. I must decline a newspaper controversy, and think your columns may be better occupied than by Bquabblea between neighbours. If " Mechanic" feels himself aggrieved by any of my proceedings, I have. np. doubt he is aware of the proper course 'to take to obtain redress. Yours, &c, , W. H. Palmer, Wellington, 17th July, 1873.
