A DENIAL.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT.
Sir, — We shall be obliged by you publishing the following extract from a letter from Messrs Shaw Savill and Co. to us, received yesterday, giving a denial to the statement made in a leading article of your issue of 10th January last, regarding Mr John Morrison's reported connection with their house : — " In justice to Mr Morrison, we feel bound to ask you to inform the editor of the Independent that that gentleman ha3 not, nor has ever had, any interest in our firm in any shape or way, and that Buch an assertion ia simply a gross falsehood. — We are, &c,
Levin, & Co. [This journal made no positive statement, as may be seen by reading the exact words of the article: — "There are very good grounds for believing that Dr Featherston has, as one of his principal officers, a gentleman whose interest is the interest of Shaw, Savill, and Co. Mr John Morrison, formerly agent for the colony, is said to have a pecuniary interest in the firm of Shaw, Savill j and there is no doubt whatever that such opinion was largely entertained throughout the colony".— Ed,]
