MASTERTON.

(from our own correspondent.) The wardens of the Masterton Highways District met on Saturday, 7th inst. Present : Messrs J. V. Smith, W. Beetham, and H. M'Master.

A working plan was shown by Mr Robinson, the engineer, of such roads as he had laid out towards the selection on the Waipou block approved of by the Board, who ordered Mr Robinson to proceed with laying out such roads as were necessary for that part of the district. Various letters were read by the chairman ; amongst others was one from Mr R. Grant, protesting against a road being allowed to Mr Vile. This question, however, was settled some time back at the Greytown police office, when Mr Grant chopped down a bridge erected by Mr Vile on this road, which is one laid out by Government on the map ; and it only remains for the Board to mark off the ground, which they express their determination of doing when the engineer can be spared.

A letter was written to the Superintendent relative to a road across Te Ore Ore plain to the Wangaehu bridge. This road requires to pass through native lands, and the Board consider that it is the duty of the Government to lay it off on the ground.

The sum of £5 was paid to Mr Robinson on account of men's wages, and £4 14s 6d for printing. Mr Carkeek has succeeded in erecting another trig station on Tiffin's HiU at Hurunuiorangi. Mr Gear drove throup-h Masterton on Saturday last 55 fat buUocks, destined for WelUngton. They were from Mr Vallance's, Kahumingi.

Mr Fuller, on his return to Greytown, had the misfortune in, the darkness to coUide with a telegraph pole, smashing the buggy and throwing the passengers with violence. Fortunately they were not seriously hurt. The runaway horses continued their mad gallop until meeting a trap and horse, and attempting to pass oh each side, they were brought up in that position, being atill harnessed together.
