After an acrimonious debate of over two days the House of Commons negatived without a division Smith's motion demanding from the Government a statement of their views respecting the adjustment of imperial and local direct taxation before any further reduction was made in the indirect taxation. The Supreme Court Judicature Bill was passed through committee of the Lords. Paris, May 2. Thiers, speaking on the present state of France, said he felt the situation a difficult one, but hoped to overcome it, and with that view asked for the confidence of the Republicans. Barodet's election continues to disquiet political parties in France, and it is feared that a serious conflict between Radicals and Monarchists is brewing. Rome, May 2. The Italian Ministry have resigned. Vienna, May 1. The grand International Exhibition was opened to-day with great ceremony. The whole spectacle was most impressive. The Prince of Wales and Prince Arthur were present, with a number of German Princes, Archdukes, and State dignitaries. The building was crowded with visitors.
