WRECK OF THE QUEEN OF THE EAST.

xne ionoTTiDg jeccer nas oeen sent to me Sallarat Star : — Sir — Having noticed in your telegraphic despatches from Sydney, 20th May, the return of the steamer Paterson from the wreck of the Queen of the East, lost on the 18th of April on a reef in lat. 29deg 30min S. and lon. Is9deg 40min E., the said reef not, laid down upon tho captain's chart, permit mo to tender a little information with reference to the above-named locality. I have in my possession a chart of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, dated in the year 1846 ; on it is marked a shoal named the Golden Qvore Shoal, situated in lat. 29ilpg 40min S. and lon, 159deg 50min E. ; tho difference of 10 miles either way might be accounted for by calculation affer tho sun's observation was taken. You may reasonably conclude the said ohonl or reef was known to exist many years prior to 1846, and should be laid down on the chart belonging to the enptain of the unfortunate Teasel. The bearings are, from Lord Howe's Island N. by B. i E. 100 miles, and S. by W. k W. 85 miles from Sir Charles Middleton's Island. N.W. by W. 50 miles from Golden Grove Shoal is another named Middleton's : Shoal. S.E. by E., about 70 miles from Golden Grove, is another, but not named j and S.W. by W. i W. 40 miles is Clark's or Eliznboth Eeef, thus showing the ship was in the centre of a group of shoals and reefs, which ought not to bo omitted from any chart used for navigating purposos. If this should moefc tho eye of some shipmasters about to shape their course in the direction above described, it ■would be well for them to examine their charts and soe if they are defective or nob as to that particular locality. If my humble endeavors semceable to any of my claBS I sball bo re-

warded. By inserting tho above in your widely-spread journal, you will oblige an old mariner. — Yours, &a, F. J. M. SYEB. Siuythesd&le, Mivy 23.
