CITY COUNCIL.

Fuidat, Junh 14. The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held this day. Present— Tho Mayor (in tho chair), Councillors Moss, Bannatyne, Borlase, Miller, Rjunio, trull. BEMIS3ION OF BATH. Mr Ebden applied to tho Council to remit portion of the rate on his property in Moles worth street, part of which being occupied by the General Gtovornment, Mr Ebden considered they should pay half the rate. The vote of the Cauncil was against any reduction being mode. COEHESPONDENCE. The outward correspondence haying been read, A letter was read from Mr Hooker, contractor to the Council for the supply of timber, Complaining that timber had been purchased from other persona. The fault waa considered to lay with Mr Hooker himself. A letter from the Provincial Seorotavy was road, making an offer of £200 towards the making of certain streets on the reclaimed land on conditions to be observed by the City Council. Councillor Boblase suggested that the offer should be accepted. He considered the marking off of the streets on tho roclaimod land had in itself considerably enhanced tho value of the property, and the making of the roads would still more increase its value. By doing so they would improve tho appearance of the city very much, and it would bo wise on their part to accept so liberal an offer on tho part of the Provincial Government. Councillors Kbtjll and Ramie supported this view and tho offer was accepted on the vote of the Council. A letter was read from Messrs A. P. Stuart and Co., offering to the Council the right to continue the line of road from Cuba street through his property on certain terms. The consideration of the matter was deferred or six months. A letter from Pascoe and Co., brewers, calling the attention of the Council to the condition of portion of Tory street waa read. The Stjevetoe said tho present condition of the road at tho point indicated was very dangerous. The Council directod the Surveyor to attend to the matter. A letter from Messrs Jackson and Graham, leßßees of tho wharf, was read, calling attention to tho drawbacks which they had been subjected to in consequence of the progress of the works on the wharf. The letter itated that when the draft lease was being prepared, and they consented to the time to be allowed for tho whole repairs of the wharf, it was on tbe distinct understanding and assurance given to them by the Mayor and the solicitors to the Corporation that the sheds were to be completed and handed over to th«m with all convenient speed, certainly within three months from tho time of taking up the lease. It was further pointed out that tho flooring of the sheds was not in a condition quite suitable for tbe purposes for which the sheds wore likely to be required. The Matoe said tho letter contained itatements ■which were entirely untrue, as he had never said that the contractors should bo put in possession of the sheds in three months ; they had not yet been handed over to the Council, but the lessees would bo put in possession in the time stipulated, namely, six months from the signing of the contract. The matter was allowed to drop without any farther comment or action being taken. A letter from Mr T. Buchanan, of Loith, was read, stating that the material for the waterworks would be shipped in July. THE JIBE BBIGADES. Captain Whiteford and Mr Wetherill waited upon the Council as a deputation from the Wellington Volunteer Fire Brigade to request tho Council to make an annual grant to the Fire Brigades. Councillor Moss said the Central Fire Brigade had at a former period received & grant from the Council, but the second application waa not so successful. It was desirable that the Couucil should assist tbe Brigades in the manner adopted in all other citioi of the cojouy. If the Counoil wore to assist the Brigades as they should do it would prevent the officials of the Brigades going about begging from door to door for subscpriptions as they had been compelled to do. Another matter ho had to draw attention was that the Fire Inspectors received no remuneration. In Canterbury, the Fire Inspector roooivod £100 per annum, out of which ho was enabled to entertain hia men annually, and to provide literature for a reading room in connection with the Brigade. He was awaro that he could not accept any remuneration for tho performance of the duties of Fire Inspector, but lie thought the fact that he performed the duties honorarily should weigh with the Council in inducing them to make a grant towards the maintenance of the Brigade The Ma yob suggested that tho subject should be brought before the Council as a joint request from both brigades. ■He wob quite willing to support an application of the iind, bufc the information placed before the Council was hardly full enough for the Council to take any action upon at its present meeting. Councillor Boblabe considered it tho duty of the Council to support men who so nobly devoted themselves to the duty of suppressing fires, but ho would prefer to see the matter deferred till some better data wore placed before them. Councillor Moss moved that £100 per annum be voted to the Brigades, £50 to bo given to each. Councillor Bannattne expressed his willingness to support the Brigades either with his advice or out of his pocket. The Matob repeated his opinion that tho subject should be postponed, and tho coneideration of the matter was then deforrod till next sitting of the Council. PBINTIN& COMMITTEE. This committee was granted an extension of time till next sitting day to bring up its report, TENDEE3. The following tenders for supplying rock and shingle for making the streets on the reclaimed land were read: — Lovelock and Pudney, for rock, under 500 tons, 2s 4d per ton ; over 1000 tons, 2s 2d. James and Company, 2s 2d per ton all round, (accepted). Gknnaway & Co., for shingle, at 3s lOd per ton, (accepted). The tenders for kerosene wore as follows : — G-. Crawford, 2s 8d per gallon, Devoe's (accepted) ; Logan, 2b lOd ; Duncan, 2s lOd ; Carpenter, 3s. BANK ACCOUNT. Tho position of the bank account was stated by the Clerk to be as follows :— General Account, overdrawn, £53 19b lOd ; Wharf Account, to credit, £561 12s 5d ; Reclaimed Land Account, to credit, £130 14s 5 Waterworks Account, overdrawn, £18 2d Bd. THE CBICKET GROUND. Coouncilor Boblase said ho and others who acted with him had done their best to render the Cricket Ground an ornamental piece of cultivation, bufc they found their labors considerably frustrated by the number oi goats allowed to encroach upon the enclosure. To remedy this annoyance ho suggested that the advice of the City Solicitor Bhould be obtained as to whether tho City by-lawa were in force or not, becauso if they wore it gave power to shoot every goat trespassing it gardens and other places, and ho would ver? jpon see that this part of the provision mtm carried into effect if it were legal to do so. Tho Matoe said the proceedings necea sary to give legality to the by-laws restoc with Councillor Moss. Councillor Moss regretted that as his broth ci committee men were not present, and he die not care to assume to himself the whole o the responsibility of the report on tho subject, its consideration would have to be deferred. As all that remains to be done to givi legality to the by-laws is to have them printe< it was decided to advertise them, ac this woul( answer the same purpose.

j MULQEAVE STREET. Councillor Rainih drew attention to tho absence of ft rail at tho foot of Mulgrave street, nnd the fcbsoluto neccessity of having some protection placed ab tho breastwork to prevent further loss of lifo. No result was come to. ST. PETER' 3 CIIUROH. A [deputation of churchwardens of St. Peter's Church, consisting of Messrs Cheeseman, Quick, and Kobbell, waited on tho Council to request that a lamp bo placed at tho corner of the street where tho church is situated. The Matoe informed the deputation that it bad already been decidod to do all that l;ho deputation desired should be done in the I neighborhood of the church. ! The deputation thon withdrow and the Council adjourned.
