TOTAL WRECK OF THE LEONIDAS.
By the arrival of the Coomerang, the Auckland papers learn of the total loss of the achooner Leonidas, the property of Captain Nom's, of the Bay of Islands. The schooner left Auckland during the last week in September having on hoard a full cargo of general merchandise for Mr M'Math, who is about to commence business at Wangape. The " New Zealand Herald" baa received the following from its correspondent at Russell: — "The crew of the schooner Leonidas hns arrived here ; the vessel is a total wreck at Wangape. It appears that she had passed the greater i part of dangers, when, owing to the swell increasing with the flood tide, she was swept on j to a very high rocky point, where, if it had not been for the great assistance rendered by the natives, not a soul could have been saved. The vessel was all in pieces two or three hours after the crew had left her. An enquiry was held by Mr Von Sturmee, the officer in charge of Customs, Hokianga." Captain Norris, in his account of the wreck, eays : — " Had it not been for tha natives, I do not think any of us j would have been Baved, as the sea was rising. About two and a-half hours after the vessel Btruck she was a complete wreck, owing to the rocky nature of tho heads. Nothing could be Bared. The vessel waß not insured."
