GENERAL SUMMARY.
The wool brokerage and the question as to the policy of the London and Colonial Banks acting as agents with consignments have drawn forth a long and bitter correspondence on both sides. The Eclipse committee have despatched a complete set of instruments for the expedition to North Australia. Montgomery shot himself with v pistol. He was newly married. His wife was in the next room at the time. Verdict— suicide during temporary insanity. There were great rejoicings at Inveravy to welcome the Marquis of Lorn and Princess Louise. The Prince and Princess of Wales are on the continent. Mr Gladstone, in a speech at Whitby-, vindicated his administration, and afterI wards justified their financial policy . Richard Wallace has been created ajP baronet for his services during the siege/ of Paris. The " Times " and " Daily News " warn the Government that the rejection of the Ballot Bill by the Lords has produced little excitement, but that nn agitation is arising for a reform of the House of Lords. Regarding the mail service, Mr Monsell thinks that steamers fitted to carry a large number of passengers through the tropics cannot be fast enough for mail steamers. He favors the Californiao route, alternative with the Suez. The head of a New Zealand chief is advertised for sale in London. F. H. Troup returns to New Zealaud by the next Oalifornian mail. Dr Featherston has taken an office in Westminster Chambers. He intends to proceed to Germany during the month to arrange about emigration, but, so far, little has been done in Britain towards furthering the emigration policy of the Government. Walter Buller has been appointed Secretary to Dr Featherston. Sir Charles Clifford has returned firm New Zealand, and is looking better for the trip.
