CnEiSTCHURcn.— The " Lyttelton Times" of Saturday, 28th instant, reports as follows : — A dull market has closed in broadstuffa, no salcß of any consequence having come under our notice. The absence of the demand for wheat has caused a further decline, and we cannot now quote even prime parcels at anything over 43 to 4s 3d, und at these prices buyers are chary in operating. Quotations for flour are merely nominal, and we see no prospect of any improvement. Very little barley is offering, but we hear of few inquiries. Really good malting samples would fetch 3s up to 3s fid. Prime short oats aro wanted, and a steady local demand exists, and 2s 9d has been paid in store for extra prime parcels. Discoloured and faulty oats fetch from 2s 3d to 2s 4d, and bright samples of Tartarian 2s 4d to 2s 6d. Provisions move off steadily. Potatoes have been placed in small lots at £4 10s, but the market is well cleared. Hams and bacon are quoted at 6£d to 7zd, with no demand. Butter is easier in value at 6id to 6|d. Cheese a drug at 3d to 3^d. Melboubnu.— The "Argus" of tho ZOlh instant reports : — In the import markets business is without any sign of improvement. The feverish and excited state of the share market is evidently having a most prejudiciul effeob upon trade generally, and will, doubtless, continue to do so while the excitement lasts. In breadetuffa there ia very little interest exhibited, and no sales but of the most trifling description for trade requirements can be referred to. Flour barely maintains late quotations of £12 15s to £13, the market not being at all strong. In Adelaide wheat there is scarcely sufficient doing to establish a quotation ; purchasers of small parcels cannot be got to offer over 5s 9d to 5s lOd. New Zealand, of fair quality, has been offering at 49 7d, without being responded to. In feeding grains we note sales of oats under the hammer, when some 800 bags wore cleared off at 3s Id to 3s lid. There is very little indeed doing privately. Quotations range from 3s for common to 3s 6d for stout milling sorts. Maize attracts no notice. We r«tain our quotations of 3s lOd to 3s lid. The London and Australian Agency Corporation held its opening sale ef wool this afternoon. The attendance waß large, and tho biddings spirited. The advance realised since the season commenced was not only sustained, but; in some instances an improvement was established. 932 bales were offered ; only one lot was withdrawn. Tho remaining 714 bales were quitted.
