An inquest was held to-day on the bodies of the Chinamen who died on board the Union. The verdict was that death had been caused by improper food and want of cleanliness. Nelson, Monday. Sailed, 23rd — Claud Hamilton, for Melbourne via West Coast. Hokitika, Monday. Sailed, 22nd— 7 p.m., Gothenburg, for Greyraouth; Northern Light, for Melbourne. Arrived — Sarah and Mary, from Melbourne, Taranaki, Saturday. A fearful thunderstorm took place this morning. The roof of the powder magazine was blown off. The body of a man who was missing has been found in the Mangoraka River. At the inquest a verdict of accidental death was returned. Timaru, Monday. The Agricultural Show, to be held on Wednesday, promises to be the best ever held in the district, more especially in sheep. There are 135 entries of merino, and 83 of long wooled ; of implements, 44 ; rlairy produce, 87 ; and other exhibits 9d entries. Dunkdin, Monday. Mr Clifford, Secretary to the Acclimatisation Society, offers to tost his brother's patent boat-lowering apparatus against any other invention of the same kind for £100 ; the test to be the placing of a life-boat on an exposed part of the coast. The recent crushing of the Canada Reef causes considerable excitement in the neighborhood. Severn! claims have been pegged off. and £250 has been tefused for a share in the Ocean View Claim.
