TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. gi K) — I observe that; your Palmerston correspondent in his last week's letter mentions that (i a goodly number of intending settlers are anxiously waiting for the Provincial Government to give effect to the Land on Deferred Payments Act" Now, it really is to be hoped that some action may be taken in this matter without delay. Every month that passes by, Bees money wasted, that might (were this act in force) be expended in making homes out of the wilderness. Tho authorities seem willing to expend almost any Bum in introducing new chum immigrants, and yet they take no steps f,o induce the seasoned colonists we already have in the province, to remain with us as permanent settlers. With regard to the rumor which is abroad as to the probability of tho Government abandoning the road running through Palmerston to Kangitikei, and which is alluded to by your correspondent ; all I can say is, that if they do abandon it, they will raise a nice hornet's Best about their curs. When it is considered that tho land along this line for some distance frc£a the township, was sold at an upset price of from £6 to £20 per acre, on the understanding that tho road was to bo pushed on without delay — you will bo able to form an id«*a of the indignation its abandonment would Hr^l'oduco aniong t Qe purchasers.
