♦ TO THB EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. Sic, — I observe in this mowing's paper you state that i " proposed that the colony should commence business as a banking establish* menfc." I cannot guess where you got this information certainly not in Hansard. I never made suoh a proposal, and have no intention of doing bo. My idea of £he functions of a Government is, that the less it interferes^g with what can be done by private enter* prise the better. It is, nevertheless, the duty of the Government to exeroise, by proper legislation, a duo control over the selfish tendencies of companies composed of foreign capitalists who have no real identity of interest with the colony, and who are not ready, like those of us who have come here to remain, to make some sacrifice in time, labor, or means for its advancement. — I am, &c, John Bathgatb.
