The Nile, schooner, went ashore on the Kaiapoi Bar on Thursday last, with a cargo of poeta and rails. She is not in a very dangerous position, and is expected to get off on discharging a portion of her cargo. A steam launch lately imported in the Merope by Captain Bose and Mr M'Quade has made the pasßage from Lyttelton over the Sumner bar and up to the bath-houses oil the Avon successfully. On the way up her guage glass got broken; but the accident will not interfere with her appearance at the opening of the boating today, for which occasion her enterprising owner brought her round to Christohuroh. Messrs Sparrow and Thomaß, Cumberlannd, Dunedin, are engaged in making and fitting together the frame and plates of an iron steamer for Messrs Williams and Archer, and intended to ply on Lake Wakatip. The vessel will be taken to pieces again, and will be sent up in a few weeks. Her total weight, including her engines and boiler, tho latter of which is being made here, will bo about 40 tons, which will make a little work for the waggoners. The " Wanganui Herald" notices the progress made in the building of the steamer on the beach opposite Mr Beevan's store, &nd says ifc speaks well for Wanganui, to see on tbe slips, building at the same time, a large Bailing craft and a steamer. The following are tbe dimensions of the latter vessel. Her length on the keel will be seyenty feet, beam sixteen feet with six feet depth. The framework will be rata with rimu planking, copper fastened. The engine is in Mr Murray's hands, and will be ready in a short time.
