CITY COUNCIL
The City Council met yesterday j the Mayor presiding.
CORRESPONDENCE,
Mr Toxward attended, to make inquiries as to any Bystem of sewerage of whioh advantage might be taken for the drainage of the Hospital, and was recommended to m&ke his application in writing. Mr David Anderson wrote a letter giving his reason for declining the paymsnfc for a drain whioh had been made at his requeßt, and from his property : but the Council considered that no sufficient reason was given. Dr Bulmer solicited some improvement in the state of the footpath in Taranaki street. Mr W. Ebden, wrote, suggesting that, by a bye-law, ifc should be made imperative on parties selling hay and straw in bulk to weigh the same, and stating that he waß about to erect a weigh-bridge. The Mayor, in reference to the loiter, said they had received a certain sum ior the city weighbridge, the party having certain privileges. There was no objection to Mr Ebdon erecting a weigh-bridge, but the Council could not give any privileges. Other members of the Council considered they could not compel parties to buy hay or straw by weigh-bridge weight, if they chose to do otherwise. The Clebk reported that the overdraft at the Bank was £175, and that accounts to the amount of £179 had been paid during the month past. CITT BESEBVES. Mr Moss, as one of the deputation appointed to wait upon the Superintendent on the subject of the bill dealing with the city reserves, reported that they had had a conference with his Honor and the Provincial Secretary, and that his Honor had promised, in committee of the House, to introduce as a olause a resolution of last session to the effect that the Superintendent might convey to the Mayor, Council, and burgesses of the city of Wellington, as trustees of the land, for such public purposes as might be expressed in the deeds. Mr Buckley asked if it was the faot, as he gathored from the statement of Mr Moss, that his Honor merely purposed to introduce this clause into the bill, and that the other portions were to remain in their original form. If such were the caso, they would not be in any bettor position than they were before. Mr Moss explained that, in saying that his Honor intended to introduce that clause, his Honor also proposed to withdraw clauses 4 and 10. Ho (Mr Moss) thought that would be perfectly satisfactory to the Council. Mr Buckley expressed himself satisfied. PUBLIC BATHS.
Mr Buckley, who had given notice of a motion on this subject, said he had not obtained such definite information as would enable him to proceed with his motion in the shape he intended ; but ho asked leave to propoao that tho matter should be referred to the surveyor, to suggest, in tho first place, any suitable Bite for public baths, and to afford, in the second place, some idea of the probable cost of the requisite buildings. Ho had been asked to urge upon the Council the propriety of having Buoh batha erected, either by the Couucil, or by some one authorisad to do so ; and he did so readily, being satisfied that they could bo erected, and made to yield a very fair revenue. The motion was seconded by Mr Mills, and agreed to.

Mr Buckley read a retarn which he had called for, and which had been furnished by the City Surveyor, relating to the cost of maintaining the main road from the Hutt road to tho Market Hall. ' * (THB KEBOSBNB STOBB. \^ On. the motion of Mr MoSSy a committee was appointed to consider wbftfr should be done with the kerosene store. WATERING THE BTEEBT3. Mr Moss .asked permission for one of thff officers oi the Council to wait upon the ratepayers on Lambfcon quay, for the purpose of learning what ratepayers in that . locality would contribute to the watering of the streets for a certain number of months. The request waa granted. After some other business, the Council was adjourned.
