[PEE GBEVJIiLE'S TEL. CO., BEUTEE fl AGENTS.] Timaru, Wednesday. The first sod of tho Timaru and Temuka railway was turned at noon by the Mayoress. There was a large crowd present, and the day was geuerally observed as a holiday. The representatives of the District Road Boards and | the Volunteers were present. The members of the Timaru battery and Friendly Societies marched in procession. The whole affair was a great success. For the afternoon, sports in the agricultural show grounds were organised on a large scale, but, after a third part of the programme had been gone through, they were postponed on account of the bad weather. Dunedin, Wednesday. The Southern escort has brought 3200 ounces of gold. The City Corporation has agreed to borrow £10,000 on the rates. Tauranga, Wednesday. It is rumored that Te Kooti has reached the Waikato. The report is not confirmed.
