THE NEW ZEALAND CROSS.
«. TO THE EDITOB OF THE INDEPENDENT. Sib, — May I venture to call your attention to an error in this morning's Independent in reference to the New Zealand Cross. Your reporter confounds that decoration with the New Zealand War Medal, and makes Mr M'Lean eay, in answer to my question, that the number awarded is about sereu hundred, instead of which he said that the number awarded was only seoen. Any Militiaman or Volunteer who has been under fire in tbe service of the colony is entitled to claim the medal, but nothing except an act of uncommon gallantry will entitle him to the croßß, hence the small number of the the latter.— l am, &c, John Bbycb. Wellington, Sept. 22, 1871.
