Beef, 11. per owt ; mutton scarce at 12s. Taranaki, Friday. The steamer Taranaki arrived this morning, at four o'clock, in New Plymouth roadstead. She has been detained since Tuesday, by the unsettled state of the Manukau bar. There are
250 Chinamen on board for Dunedin. She leaves for Nelson at 7 a.m. Christchuroh, Friday. The grain market is inactive, except the shipment now being forwarded per Velocidade to Auckland. Thero aro a few sales of wheat. Holders demand 5s to 5s 3d, and farmers are loth to accept anything under 5s for top samples. Flour, 11. lower. Oats meet good support at 2s 6d to 2s 8d ; stored samples, 2s s£d to 2s 6|d for forward delivery. Good malting barley fetches readily 3s to 3s 6d. Butter, ready market, 7d to 1i& for good samples. Potatoes, scarce, at 22. 15s to 81. Hams and bacon almost unsaleable, except at prices which leave considerable loss. A public meeting last night passed resolutions for ah intercolonial and interprovincial four-oared boat race on the Heathcote estuary for 1502., or nt the option of the winner for a plate of that value. Dunedin, Friday. i A man named White has been killed at Switzer's by a fall of earth. Michael Cowitan, a farmer at Arrow, was killed by falling from his horse. Bridget Gee pleaded guilty to concealment of birth, and was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. There is little doing in wheat, but small sales are effected at 5s 3d. Flour quiet, only in trade transactions ; quotations, 14.1. Oats steady, 2s 2d to 2s 4d. Barley dull at 3s 9d. Barley overstocked, Telegraphic advices from Melbourne to the Gth report flour at 14?. 10s to 101. Sugar firmer. Nelson, Friday. Two fishermen have been drowned off the entrance to Waimea River. A. painful boat accident occurred last night. The boat was trying to come through tbe boat passage in the Boulder Bank. Messrs WilHam Webber and Sleaver, and Caroline Reynolds and child were drowned. The survivors were picked up, much exhausted, by the lighthouse keeper. A meetiug of ratepayers of the city was held last night, when a decision was arrived at in favor of the Nelson system of education. The country ratepayers express the same opinion. Hokitika, Friday. Cassius' claim at Ross has come upon wash dirt from six to seven feet thick, which gives half a dwt to the dish. The bar channel is much improved. DeJLoree, for a robbery of jewellery, was sentenced to three years ; Cameron, for robbeiy of money, to four years ; and Levy, for forgery, to eight years. Oamaru, September 13. We quote wheat at 4s 6d ; oats, 2s ; with few transactions at these priceß, aud a downward tendency. Flour, lil. ; oatmeal, 15/. ; pollard, U. ; bran, 3/. ; and potatoes, 3os to 21.
