THOMAS, THE DOUBTER.
TO TnE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT,
Sin,— Air Gillies, in a bitter-as-gull, or, shall I say, bitter-as-Gillies— nay to-night roluscd to believe— (his name is "Tlumns, tho Unbeliever;" vide St. Matthow, passra) — refused to believe tho statement of Ministers, that they never employed or authorised any of the civil servants to write for or correspond with newspapers. Now, sir, I wish, through you, to ask tho charming Mr Gillies a question or two, videlicit : — . 1 Is Mr Frederick Moss correspondent m Auckland for tha " Otago Daily Times" ? 2. Is Mr Moss a civil servaut under Mr Gillies, as Superintendent of Auckland ? and at the time of his appointment was he acting aa correspondent, telegraphic or otherwise, for the above mentioned papor ? From tolerably certain knowledge 1 think I could answer each of these questions in the affirmative, but I waive thafc privilege, and leave it to Mv Gillies to reply. m It seems to me, sir, that Mr Gillies 8 ( virtuous indignation is, in value, on a par with hie honied 'words and political sweetness of dispo: sition.— Yours, &c, -Wormwood* Friday night.
