Rain and bad roads prevent anything being done beyond actual shipping requirements. Shippers have a considerable quantity already purchased. Holders of stock are looking for advances upon late quota tions. Beef, 20s per 100 lbs • fat merino wether, Gs to 9s ; half bred, 10s to 14s ; upstanding carriage horses ancl goodheavy draught stock are difficult to obtain except at high prices. Purchasers need not look for a reduction in prices for months, as only tbe best runs can keep cattle in condition duiing the continued bad weather. Taranaki, Friday. Hearl, late of the Armed Constabulary, was tried to-day, and sentenced to one years' imprisonment, with hard labor. Hokitika, Friday. Hams and bacon are unsaleable, other produce is firmer. Messrs Routledge & Co quote fat bullocks at 17s Od to 20s per lOOlbs ; half-bred cheep, 13s to los* store steers, £3 10s to £5 10s ; store sheep aro in great demand ; pigs, 2d per lb, The Borough Council proposes a loan of £20,000 at 6 per cent. The reported coal discovery at the Thames is about 5 miles from Grahamstown. Caledonians are quoted at £130. News has been received that the Victorian Government protests against the sending of Communists to New Caledonia. The immigrants per Halcione were all engaged on good terms. A cbild has been scalded to death at Te,Aute through drinking out of the spout of a teapot. Ciihistcuui-CK, Friday. The produce market is without alteration. A few parcels of milling wheat bave changed hands at 5s 3d. Stocks ol flour are heavy ; quotations £15. Good oats are wanted at 2s 7d ; butter, 7d to 7-} d ; potatoes, £2 10s to £2 15s ; cheese, almost unsaleable, at 3£d to 4d. Stocks of hams and bacon are increasing. No sales. Dunedin, Friday. A public meeting has been held at Lawrence, at which a petition was adopted, denouncing Provincialism, praying for the substitution of local government, and that the General Go vernment take charge of the gold fields. Markets, flour is quiet at £14, and the demand is confiued to present re quirements. Bran is unsaleable at £2 15s to £3 - wheat is dull at 5s Gd, and there is a fair inquiry for oats at 2s 3d to 2s 5d ; fine malting barley, 3s 9d. Auckland, August 20. The New Zealand Insurance Company's buildings were insured in tbe Victorian Company for £#000. Tbe loss 'is betivcen £2000 and £3000. The fire originated on the staircase of tbe news-room, whicb has been c©rapletely gutted, and all the upper rooms are destroyed. The annual nfeetiug of tbe Caledonian Company has been held. Tho report shows that £413,270 has been distributed in dividends, equal to £14 1 10s por share. Mr Joseph May has beon elected Chairman of Petty Sessions, vice O'Neill. Four thousand shares have been applied for iv the now gas company. The first sod ot the Kaipara railway was turned yesterday by the DeputySuperintendent.
