Wo, the undersigned Ratepayers and other inhabitants of the City of Wellington, having in view the action taken by tho Council with reference to involving tho city in a debt of £50,000, consider, in a matter of such great importance, that tlie Ratepayers' opinion should be directly consulted. Considering, also, that tho present Council (with ono exception) were elected to perform the limited ; functions of Commissioners for tho Board of Works, and were nob expected to pledge the inhubilantß and ratepayers, nnd their properties, for such extensive liabilities when iirst elected, wo respectfully urge and request the Mayor and present Councillors to resign, and to nfford all persons interested tho privilege of electing representatives to undertake tho larger and moro important duties that now devoJvo on tho Municipality of tho Capital City of tho Colony. In making this request we, however, gladly acknowledge tho gratuitous services willingly rendered by yourself and tho Council in promoting the interests of tho city, but aro strongly of opinion that, as much moro extended powers are now conferred on the Municipality, tho ratepayers should bo allowed tho opportunity of giving an expression of their deliberate opinion upon subjects which may so directly affect their own futuro personal interests as tho borrowing of £50,000, or any other sum, fov the purchase of tho Reclaimed Land and Wharf, or any other Provincial property.
