Phccbo, Captain Worsp, will be due here on Friday morning next from Northern ports, and will sail on Sunday for Lyttelton and Otago. A trial was made yesterday afternoon, to test the qualities of Mr Douglas' newly-in-vented apparatus for lowering boats, and we are pleased to say that tho trial proved very satisfactory indeed. The Taranaki left the wharf about 3 o'clock, and, taking a sweep round the harbor, came up again abreast of the wharf, and whilst going at tho rato ot fully seven knots an hour, tho boat was lowered ,'into tho Mater. There was a large number of persons on tho wbarf to witness the operation, and thoy all expressed themselves pleased afc tho satisfactory manner it was performed. It is a decided improvement on the old way of lowering boats, and will no doubt be generally adopted by all eea-going vessels. -• The ship Edinburgh Castle is expected to _c loaded by Saturday, with a full cargo of wool, flax, and other produce. Her sails are already bent, and she will probably take her departure about the middle of next week^ The English clipper ship Napier, of Liverpool, and last from Melbourne, went ashore at Baker's Island on the morning of April 24. We understand thafc she was insured. Ifc is probable thafc tho value of vessel and cargo (she had nearly completed 1 onch'ng) will not fall short; of 100,000 dollars. Tho crew, to-, gether with what articles were saved from tho wreck, arrived in the Ward.— '' Hawaiian Gazette," July 12. The s.s. Wonga Wonga occupied 37 days fivo hours on her passage from Sydney to San Francisco via Fijis and Honolulu. She left again July 18 for Honolulu. Several passengers have published in San Francisco letters complaining of the accommodation afforded to them on board that vessel. Among the passengers who sailed by her from San Francisco for Auckland wo notice the names of Mr and Mrs C. J. Hoyfc and Mrs C. M. Waro.
