[SOUTHEEN OEOSB.] At the Police Court this morning the lad Quinn was brought up on remand charged with stealing specimens from the Caledonian Company, and was found guilty, and sentenced to six months' imprisonment, cumulative upon six months' imprisonment for stealing specimen tailings. The Moanatairi Company have obtained 4410z gold for the fortnight; 2HQ tons of stone were crushed. 9 p iin . — Good specimens have been obtained from the Harbor View mine. Specimens are still being taken out of the winze in the Caledonian mine. There is already 6 cwt of specimen stuff on hand. At a meeting of the directors of the Twenty-third of June Groldm ning Company, a dividend of 3s Od per share was declared. Business in the sharemarket is quiet. Caledonian shares are firm at £175 ; Thames, £35; Tookey, £32; Central Italy, 40s to 42s 6d ; Golden Calf, 50s ; Brunswick, 4s 6d ; Port Phillip, 7s 6d. [New Zealand Herald] The Caledonian have taken out 3£ cwt specimens from the east side of No. 1 winze ; some of them extraordinarily rich. A fine haul of specimens will be made to-morrow. The Twenty-third of June have crushed 95 tons, which gave 74 ozs, and from specimens crushed last week 254 ozs, or a total of 328 ozs melted gold. The Poverty crushed 90 tons at the Herald battery, which yielded only 14 ozs. They will resume crushing on a heavy lot to-morrow at the Manukau. The Providence tributers have taken out another fine patch of specimens. The Inverness have crushed four days with ten heads, and the result is 250 ozs hard amalgam ; crushing going on The Moanataui have lodged 50 ozs ; balance to-morrow. ! The want of powder has began to seriously affect many of the companies. The Manukau, Golden Crown, Una, Woanatairi, Kuranui, and other large companies will be idle to-morrow or the day following. [Morning- News.] Mr C. O'Neill has been here in connection with the Government water supply. He expects to have the plans, and specifications, and estimates of the works in the hands of Mr Blackett, the Engineer-in-Chief, in the course of a few weeks. Caledonians and Thames became more firm to-day. The market does not really now depend half so much upon the state of the mine as it does on the supposed intentions of some big people. The article in the " Herald," cracking the mine up, produced quite an opposite effect, as I regret to say people went abouymd said it was written with a purpose. What purpose ? To keep scrip up, so that it might sell well? , Quien sabe ? Central Italy is in good — in excellent i — prospects. Several who sold out ; under a mistake about it are keeping ' quiet on the subject, so as to prevent scrip getting up. They want to buy i back. The press is a mighty engine, ! especially on a goldfield. ; The Moanatairi have a total from . their crushing of 4350zs lOdwts. [Evening News.] Caledonians falling. No apparent reason for this in the mine. The native dispute about the miners' rights for the block of ground on which the Caledonian and other claims are situate bus been adjusted by Mr Mackey There were 800 ounces of retorted gold deposited in the Bank of NewZealand from the Caledonian company this day. Nobody knows what to say about Caledonians. There is an atmosphere of suspicion about the market in reference to the claim. A good deal of ihe drop is caused by rumors to the effect that certain parties whose names have been frequently mentioned in connection with the mine, are selling out. The complete trial of the new machine, patented by Mr Bach, for the reduction of quartz or tailings, will take place to-morrow. [Evening- Stab.] The Caledonian will make a final lodgment of gold from fortnight's cleaning up this afternoon. The show to-day is splendid. Scrip rising in value. The Nonpareil have taken out one cwt. ipecimens.
