CnßlSTcnuEcn. — The " Times" of July 5 reports : — Brandies are held for higher rates. Hennessy's has been quitted during the week at 8s 3d to 8s 6d. C.V.P. is likewise attracting more favor at 7s 4d to 7s Bd. Horniessy's case does not improve in value to any extent, owing to tho many small holders, and cannot be quoted at anything over 31s 6d. Duxiville, and Kinahan's LL, in case, have been placed Bomowhat freely in trade lots, and values show an upward tendency. Bulk whisky, of favorite brands, is moving off with more freedom ; Campbell ton and Islay being placed at 5s 6d to 6s ; Dunville's and Jameson's do, 6s to 63 6d. Good stout is very scarce at Us 9d to 12s. Bottled ales cannot bo quitted unless at a concession on recent rates, and stocks increasing. Pew enquiries exist for sugars ; tho trade aro holding back for tho Novelty's shipment, which will bo submitted by auction on the Bth insfc. Several good trade sales of crushed loaf sugar have eomo under our notice at £58 to £59 10i (Dutch) and £62 (English). Candles continue in active request, and the retailors have some difficulty in laying in supplies at llf- to Is. Moderate sales of kerosene only can be reported ; this market, we think, has seen the lowest, as holders, during tho last few days, have shown a little more firmness at 33 Id to 3s 3d. Cornsacks do not improve in demand at 14s. Currants have been moving off somewhat freely at b\d to s£d. Cape and Elomo raisins are not to bo had, unless at extreme figures. Moderate sales of fine salt have occurred at £4 155. Twist tobacco cannot be quitted at late rates, owing to the continued heavy shipments which come to hand from Melbourne. Holders of wheat still demand 5s Gd. Millers report a falliug off in export orders foe flour ; quotations for best brands remain at £14 15s to £15 nett caoh, Oats como forward slowly j good light lots of potato meet with a ready market at 2s 6d to 2s Gd. Tartarian, of prime quality, are in Bteady request at 2s 2d to 2s 3£d, and few offering. Barley can only bo quitted in trifling lots, and no improvement in price can be noted. An extensive business can be reported in butter, prime lots for immediate export being Bcarce at 7d. Cheese is very dull, owing to heavy stocks held by the farmers. Values. range from 3£d to 4£d, according to quality. Potatoes have been dealt in somewhat sparingly at £1 15s to £2 le. Messrs Bird & Bennett report as follows for the week ending August 4 : — Horses — A demand still exists for upstanding useful horses. On Saturday last, at cur repository, wo disposed of the racing stud of Mr H. H. Stafford, at satisfactory prices. Quotations remain the same as last week, viz : — First-class draught, £32 to £38 ; medium, £22 to £26 ; good light harness horses and hacks, £16 to £25 ; useful do, £10 to £15 ; inferior, nominal.
Meij3Ol7ene. — The "Argus" of July 27 reports : — ln the import markets business has been much quie:er, and there has also been less excitement observable than for some days, and altogether a somewhat uninteresting day has been passed. Tho market for breadstuffs has become unsettled by the auction Bales of flour, making it a matter of difficulty to give a reliable quotation. Dawson's South Australian flour was sold publicly this forenoon at £15 2s 6d, and wo understand that Mount G-ambier flour was disposed of at £15. In Adelaide flour nothing whatever in the way of sales has come before us. Tusmnnian has been wanted at £14 to £14. ss. Wheat is firm : wo learn of the disposal of a line of 3000 bushels Port MacDonnell at a very full price ; and 7s has been offered for fine Adelaide, in quantity, without being responded to. Oats are in better request; the finest qualities only have met with notice. Quotations are unaltered, ranging from 3s 6d to 3b 7d. One line of 1200 bushels Tusmaiiian was placed at 3s 6d, and one small parcel of 800 bushels, Blightly discolored, was sold at 3s 3H- Maize is quoted at 3s 9d for parcels. A lino of 5000 bushels bran has been placod at la Id, and a shade under was offered and refused for 10,000 bushels. We have fewer sales of tea to refer to. There is, however, a fair inquiry still, aud several transactions are said to be pending. We learn of equal to 300 chests having been disposed of at Is 5d to Is 9d. In sugars wo hear of 400 bags Mauritius having been quitted at 35a to 375. A parcel of 500 matß Java crystals was cleared off at up to £40 for extra fine white crystals ; 809 mats damaged Java were quitted at £32 15s to £33 ss. There is, moreover, a prospect of increased activity in the market, considerable parcels being advertised for sale on Friday nexb. Amongst the parcels to bo disposed of we notice lfiOO bags, balance of the Pacific and James Hannell's cargos ; 1200 bags damaged Java sugar, in pockets, ex Sybil and May Queen ; also the cargo of tho Sea Nymph, from Natal, amounting to 1600 bags.
America. — The luteßt American commercial news ia to the effect that the Jas. Stone and Hawester were loading at Boston for Melbourne The Iludson at New York was to sail on the 10th June. Sho had 10,000 cases of kerosene and 100,000 feet of lumber engaged. The Californiun crop prospects had boon much improved by tho favorable weather.
