THE CONVENT SCANDAL IN FRANCE
t TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. » Sir, — As tho above seems to interest tha public, it is perhnps well to giro you a translation of a communication made to the " Gazette of Cologne," published 28th May, by two Gorman members of the Picpus Cong.-a-gnlion, at present on a visit to Germany. In olden times the sisters of the Picpus Order provided cooking for the clergy and brethern, of tho Picptis Congregation. The eatablp^^ were passed through the door found near tho^fc stables, but for many years this has been done • away with and tho door bricked up. The" sisters too used to gather their vegetables out of the garden of the monastery, which explains tho door in the garden wall ; but for more than twenty years this has been bricked, up. Tho ill and idiotic sisters were cared for in a garden house, where was also the wash-house* The supply of food found in the monastery was put there since the siege by the Germans, und was the gift of other monasteries. Tha inhabitants of the monasteries themselves, suffered greatly through the siege for waut of food. I give tins for what it is worth, and leave it to you, if you think it worth inserting.— l am, &c, F. A. K.
