EDUCATION.

[to the editok op the independent.] Sir, — I read with some interest your lead* ing article of July 19, on tho Education Act passed by tho Legislature of Ontario, and I am glad to see tho matter is again taken up by ono who is deserving the thanks of the people of this province for what we have in existence already here. Although the provinces of Canterbury and Otago are well provided in this way, I think a colonial system would be much better than eight or nine different systems (still I plainly see a difficulty in tho case of Otago), because education will do much, o)' all, towards either uniting us aa a colony, or breeding provincial jealousies, thereby disuniting us. I was opposed to tho Provincial Government afc the time when Mr Fox's former bill was brought into operation, but I supported them in that, because I considored that while the sectarian system did very well in populous places, it would be impossible for the peoplo in scattered country districts to have any schools ; and now I feel certain thet there would not have been one in tho township in which I now reside but for that act. Mr Fox having again taken the matter in hand, I have every confidence thafc he will sco it advanced another stage.

I do not bolievo tho late Provincial Act will ever come into operation, for more reasons than one. One is, that tho present Provincial Secretary aud Tiva9urcr has never done anything to lead mo to suppose ho had any interest in tho education of the people. — I am, &c., GK
