POLICE COURT.

Friday, July, 28. (Before J. C, Crawford, Esq., (KM) DRUNKENNESS. James M'Lauchlin was fined 40s for this offence, or in default seven days' imprisonment. BREACH OF GAS COMPANY'S ACT. Win. Lambert, Win. Mountier, Henry Etching, R. Dixon, and F. Dixon, were charged with huving put out the lights in several lamps, belonging ti the company. Mr Travera appeared to prosecute, and stated that ho would like to take the cases separately. Moimtior then pleaded gailty, and tho case against 11. Dixon was then gone on with. Sergeant Bendy deposed that at about midnight on Saturday, he saw a number of young men round the lamp post opposite the Bank llotol, in Manners street. He saw one of them climb up tho post, opeu the door of the lamp, and put the light out. They thon put a second lamp out, when ho ran aftor them, and arrested K. Dixon, F. Dixon, Kitching, aud Lambert, and took them to the station, where their names were taken down. Mountier escaped, but witness met him on Monday, and he admitted having put tho light out. They wero altogether when tho light was put outPrisoner denied having anything to do with putting tho lamp out. F. Pixon and Henry Kitrhing were next charged, tho evidence being similar to that in the other case.

The latter cross examined tho sergeant, nnd seemed very anxious to bo told whore ho was when tho larop went out. In defence, ho said lie did not know the light was going to bo put out. He had nothing to do with it.

William Lambert then appeared, and after similar evidence to that already given, ho denied having had anything to do with putting the lights out. Tho Magistrate fined Mountior 40a and costs, and the others 20s each, nnd costs, saying that but for the fact that eomo of them would liavo to go to gaol in default if tho fine was made heavy, ho would have inflicted the full penalty of £5. Ho warned them that if a second case of tho kind was brought before him, tho full penalty should be inflicted.
