LUNATIC AT LARGE

TO THE EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT.

Sic, — I have to thank Mr Bow den for his letter in reference to our former correspondence, but in which he writes the following : " GS." tolls us he saw " with his own eyes." Why these words were used as a quotation I can only surmise. They did not appear in my letter, and must go to show he has a hard case, and that he wishes to draw me away from the matter under notice. This 1 will avoid, although if I gave way to my feelings I should certainly write a longer one than what I now have. But for this I should have let the matter drop, at all events for the present, as I considcx'ed some good had been done T. A. Bowden must agree with me that the establishment does not stand very high in the estimation of the public; but I do not cay one word against tho officers or servants of the place. Tho words I used were hard, but they were his own — I made no false quotation. I fail even now to see anything that could have led any one to the conclusion that I was attacking a man who I considered had no control over his own actions.

On reading Mr Bowden's first letter I felt at once it waa written by one belonging to the establishment, who had probably forgotten ho was a public servant, and very likely paid at the public expense ; and I think had Mr B. confined himself to writing something like the latter part of his second letfcf r it would have been much better, and answered all the purpose ; and I for one should havo considered the establishment was under tho superintendence of one who felt some interest in the matter,— l am, &c, J. G. Cox. Featherston, 24th July.
