This afternoon, however, buyers mustered strongly at Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn & Co's rooms, where the sugars ex Parana were publicly offered. The cargo, which proved a well-assorted one, was well competed for, and the whole quickly placed at prices exhibiting a slight improvement upon last previous sale. For first whites, pi-ices ranged from £39 15s to £38 10s ; second whites, £38 to £37 5s j inferior whites, £36 to £35 15s ; good pale crystals brought £36 2s Gd ; faij yellow and grey crystals, £34 5s to £33 10s ; darker and brown crystals, £33 to £31 108 ; rations, £29 12s 6d to £29 10s. CnursTcnußcn.— Tlio " Times" of July 15 has the following report : — Crushed loaf eugar is meeting with a steady demand ; stocks aro well cleared out. Dutch is realising freely £58 10s, and for English as high as £62 has been obtained. Teas are attracting more favor : medium and fine congou being well held ; inferior and broken leaf cannot be placed unless at a low figure. A steady business can be noted in kerosene ; and purchases are being made with a little more freedom afc 3s 2d to 33 3d. Several large lots are reported to have changed hands at 3s. Stocks of candles are getting very short, but values have not improved to any extent; wo still quote ll^d to llfjd. Medium sized parcels of currants find buyers at sjs d to s£d. Stocks held are ample, therefore no immodiate rise is anticipated. Eleines, sultanas, Cape, and muscatel raisins are not to be had in any quantity, consequently the few holders have been obtaining high rates. Coarse salt has advanced to £4 10s, and even at this figure stocks aro limited* Fine salt ia well held at £4 15s. Twist tobacco is offering somewhat freely, and quotations are scarcely so firm ; for superior brauds, Is 6d to Is Gid is the top figure, while medium cannot be placed at anything over Is 4d to Is 4kl, and inferior, lOd to Is. Tens of really prime quality are still scarce at Is 5d to Is 6d. The advance recectly noted in bulk brandies is now firmly established. Henncssy's and Martell's find a ready market at 8s to 8s 3d, and C.V.P., 7s 4d to 7s 6d. Hennesy's case is well held, but no improvement of any note can be observed, sales being made at 31s 6d to 325. Holders of good dry wlioat maintain a firm aspect, and several sales of thi3 description have come under our notice at 5s Gd to 5s 9d. Inferior wheat ranges from 4s to 4a Gd, according to quality. Flour cannot be bought at anything under £15 nett cash, and no allowance can even be obtained for a heavy parcel. Oats remain very firm at last week's rates. The parcels that aro now being shipped are stored lots 5 consequently, our surplus stocks are rapidly reducing, but the low prices now ruling in Otago prevent any immediate improvement. Bright milling oats are saleable at 2s 5d up to 2s 6d ; discolored ditto, 2s l£d to 2s 3d ; and for bright Tartars 2s 3d hns been given. The demand for prime butter continues active at 6£d to 6Jd, as stocks are getting reduced. Cheese is neglected at 4d to 4yd. Hams and bacon find a ready market at 8d to B.Vd. Messrs Mataon & Co. report as follows 011 the live stock market for the week ending July 14 : — We sold, for various owners, 71 head of cattle, viz, 32 eighteen months to two year old steers, from £3 5a to £3 153 per head ; 15 two and three-year old steers, in good condition, from £6 7s 6d to £7 15s ; dry cows, £3 15s to £3 17a 6d ; dairy rows, £5 5s to £6 10s. In sheep, we sold 300 cross-bred lambs at 4s to 4s Gd per head ; Merino wethers, half fat, afc Ga per head. Some prime cross-bred wethers brought 14s each, equal to a shade over 2Vd per pound.
