Melbotone.— The " Argus" of July 1, roports: — Business in the import market continues to retain tho same aspect of heaviness we bo frequently havo had to refer to of lato. The close of the half-yearly balance, when stock-taking is so general, has also helped to ntonsify the dulness complained of, but it is now hoped that upon entering on the last half of tho year, some improvement; may bo realised. Breadstuff*, especialy flour, aro treated with tho utmost neglect, tho few trade Bales effected being trifling and of no account ; for best Victorian and Adelaide country brands £16 5s to £16 10s is still given as a nominal quotation. Adelaide wheat ia offering at 7s 4d to 7b Bd, and we learn of one line of 2000 bushels having changed hands at within our quotation. Some 2000 bushels of New Zealand wheat got rid of privately at 6s 5d to 63 7da., have also been reported amongst the sales of the day. Supplies from New Zealand for the remainder of the year are not expected to bo largo, and importers of this description are in consequence a Jittle stiffer in their ideas. In f. eiing grains we learn of a parcel of good milling oats having been disposed of at 3s Bd. Low to ordinary feeding sorts are quoted at 3s 4d to 3s 6d., and in some instances 3s 7d may bo had. Maize is quoted at 3s 9Jd to 3s lOd for really good samples, but nothing of any special importance is allowed to transpire. Inquiries for teas are mentioned, but though buyers show every desire to operate, they do not come to sufficiently close quarters to enable transactions to be carried through. Sugars havo been wanted for export, and we hear of several parcels of fine browing samples having been taken up at 35s to 375. Two invoices of galvanised corrugated iron have changed hands for shipment, at prices fully sustaining the advance established in that market. A line of tin plates has been placed at about 20 per oent. advance on invoice.
