OmeO)8.8., for Melbourne, via the South, 14th Lord Ashley, s.s., for the South, 16th Eangatira, s.s., for Napier, 18th Wellington, s.s., for Picton, Nelson, Taranaki, and Manukau, 21st Taranaki, s.s., for the South, 22nd
The s.s. Lord Ashley arrived at Tauranga On Wednesday, from Auckland, and is expected to arrive here on Saturday. She will sail the following day for Lyttelton and Otago. The s.s. Wellington, Captain Kennedy, sailed yesterday afternoon for Lyttelton and Otago, with a fair number of passengers. The s.s. Taranaki, Captain Wheeler, left Nelson on Monday last for Taranaki and Manukau, with the outgoing English mail. She will remain at Manukau until the arrival of the Nebraska, due at Auckland on the 17th instant. The directors of the Bulli Company, at a recent meeting, decided unanimously in Bending Captain J. Shoobert, lato of the s.b. Barwon, to England, to superintend tho building of a now steam collier of 500 tons carrying capacity, to be fitted with compound engines, surface condenser, and all the latest improvements, Captain Sboobert's long experience in Bteamers of this description rendering him peculiarly adapted to carry out the company's instructions. He proceeds to England by the b. s. Somersetshire, — "Sydney Morning Herald." The" Broad Arrow" remarks : — " The Flying Squadron seems, from the report of its proceedings since its absence from England, to have been almost too successful. The men ■were worked to such a pitch, and were kept bo well employed all the time, that they were Bot only diminished in bulk, but in numbers, growing thinner year by year, and deserting freely when they had tho chance. The difficulty of procuring Beamen for the fleet, in sufficient numbers to compensate for recent lnes, is seriously felt. In view of such a state of things, it may be doubted whether, as a matter of policy, it is necessary to work men to the extent adopted in the Flying Squadron, Or, if BOj whether it is desirable afterwards to take them into the vicinity of the golddiggings." The lights which were ordered come time ago from Sydney, for Levuka, arrived there by the s.s, Wonga Wonga. They wero, however, injured in the transit, and consequently there will bo some delay before the present temporary lights are replaced by more powerful ones. Alexander Foxcroft, a seaman of tho ship Wincfred, was charged at tho Water Police Court, Sydney, on June 26, with cutting and wounding John E. Puyne, tho chief mate of tho same vessel. The evidence went to provo that Foxcroft used very objectionable language to prosecutor, after asking for a lamp for the forecastle, and the latter struck him in the face. Foxcroft immediately drew a sheath knife, and stabbed Payne in the side twice, inflicting wounds which, though not dangerous, were serious. He was then given into custody, and was committed for trial at the next criminal sessions. The captain mentioned that the vessel was ready for sea, but the Bench Boid they had no alternative bufc to send the case to a higher Court.
