MILITIA.
fJTO THE EDITOE OF THE INDEPENDENT.]
SIE, — Will you allow me, through the medium of your columns, to express the great indignation and dissatisfaction that the hunting up of the Militia in these districts is giving • indeed, it is both impolitic and absurd to irritate the community for what is in reality no earthly benefit. Aged and infirm men dragged unwillingly from their homes to shoulder a rifle will make but sorry soldiers, and I fear would only serve as targets for an enemy. Now I think those who are responsible and high in authority should look into the matter and see that such unnecessary provocation Bhould be discontinued, or I feel assured that men will resist.
Perhaps those in command fancy they must do something for their pay, but it would be far better to let them get their money in idleness than to be injuring and annoying the settlers. Trusting, Mr Editor, that you will use your powerful influence to get the nuisance abated. — I am, &c, Thihd Class Militiaman. Bangitikei, July 7th.
