Melbouhne.— The " Argus" of the Ist reports :— The aspect of trade generally is without materal improvement, a rather quiet feeling still prevailing. Breadstuff's are easier j lower rales having been accepted at auction for some few parcels of wheat, got rid of by that means; Port MacDonnoll roalised 6s lOd to 6s lid ; and New Zealand 5s lid to 6s 9d, the latter figure being paid for extra prime. Privately, trifling parcels of Adelaide havo been taken by the smaller millers, for mixing purposes, at 7s 6d j to quit in quantity, however, less money would hare to be accepted. Flour, in ten ton lots, is soiling at £16 10s. Feeding grains are quiet. Maize has been sold at 3s lid. Oats are in moderate request, fine heavy samples commanding numerous buyers at 3s 6d ; stained Poland were moved off at 3s 4d to 3s 4£d. Teas are in favor, and sales to a good extent arc reported. Ex Record, two linos, in half-chests, were closed for at about 13d ; in another quarter, we hear of 600 packages being disposod of at la 2d and Is 9d ; good common congou in chests is likewise being sold more freely at 13d to 14d. Sugars are lively, a good demand being experienced ; to day's transactions embrace about 1000 bags, at full prices. Kerosene in bond has not been much sought after of late. Wo hear, however, of a line of 1000 cases Devoo's huving met with a purchaser at 2s 2£d. An exteneivo public sale of tobaccocs was held to-day, resulting in the disposal of 309 packages at Is l£d to Is ljd for twist (damaged), lOd to Is 2i-d for tens, lOd for aromai'c pounds, Is lid for navy, and 8d for bars, all faults. Freight and Chakteb. — Wo tako tho following report of the state of freight and and charter from tho " Australasian Trade Review" : — Owing to tho scarcity of tonnage, we havo very few charters to report since tho departure of tho last mail. Tho following charters have been concluded up to date : — French barque Famille, 267 tons register, Nowcastlo to Java and back, £1000 for tho round. Norwegian barque Pacific, 543 tons registor, to go direct and load at Maiden Island for Hamburg direct £3 per ton. British barque Corinne, 395 tonß register, coals, from Newcastle to Yokohama, 40s per ton. British ship Thyatira, 962 tons register, coals, Newcastle to Shanghai, 34s per ton. British ship Whirlwind, 861 tons register, coals, Newcastle to Hong Kong, 28s per ton. For London— Engagements havo been made since last mail — Wool, o£d ; tallow, 45s ; bark, 40s ; measurement goods, 30s ; but all tho ships on the berth being well advanced in their loading, rates have risen to — for tallow, 50s ; measurement goods, 32s 6d j bark, 50s to 60s j leather, 50s.
