The census returns, which we publish to-day, show that (exclusive of the Armed Constabulary stationed in Wellington) there ha 3 been an increase since the date of the last census (December 10, 1867) of 1950 persons in the population of the province, which is equal to 8.88, or nearly 9 per cent, in about three years and two months. The increase in the city of Wellington in the same time has been (excluding the Armed Constabulary) 301 persons, or almost 4 per cent. Wairarapa has increased by 502 persons, being 16-36, or a little more than 10 per cent, and Wan- j ganui has increased by i>3B persons, or nearly 14 per cent. The Hutt has decreased by Bft \ -.-.-sor-s, equal to nearly
2 per cent. The boundaries of the other districts having been altered by the act of last session, they caunot be separately compared; but unitedly the country districts, Manawatu and Rangitikei, show an increase over the former Porirua and Rangitikei districts of C 44 persons, or rather more than 12 per cent. These variations show that there have been emigrations from some parts of the province to other parts of it, and indicate a further occupation of the country ; but, on the whole, the increase is hardly as much as should have been caused by the ordinary excess of births over deaths, which was 675 in 1808 and 701 in 1869.
