THE HUTT BRIDGE.
TO THE EDITOE OF THE INDEPENDENT.
Sib, — From certain works being carried on near the Hutt Bridge, and no instructions having been given to survey any other place, I infer that it is the intention of the Government to erect the bridge on the site at present being surveyed. I take it to be the the duty of the Government to ascertain the best site for its erection, not adhering pcrti* naciouely to the old spot, which liaa been proved to be the very worst on the river for a bridge, let alone the immense sums of yinne'y that have been expended in attempting, " all unsuccessfully," to keep the old bridge and approach in their positions. lam quite certain there haß been at various times expended between £1000 and £1500 for thiß very desirable object. Probably you will say, tell me a better position for a bridge ? I will do bo without fear of honest contradiction from & single individual, including those ?ery persons so immediately interested in the old site, There is a portion of the river between- Mr Stiiling's and Mr Death's land, which has a straight coureo, or nearly so ; the banks on each side have remained as they are at present for the last 26 years ; that without anything ele is sufficient proof of the desirableness of the position. It is also much narrower than the present proposed Bite j the approaches would require little or no protection, conse» quently it would be less expensive to erect the bridge. Nearly the whole rbnd would bo out of tho reach of floods on .the Wellington side. Erect the bridge on the proposed site} and there will bo a repetition of endless expenso to keep it there. The bank on the upper sida I have mysolf seen falling away frequently since tho freshet on Thursday night last. — I am, Sto } Economist.
