RIFLE SHOOTING.
TO THE EDITOB OP THE INDEPENDENT. Sib, — Ono reason why our marksmen are somewhat bohind others, is, I bolievo, the distance of tho butts from town. Anyone walking this distance would not be so steady as ono who Intel walked ono milo. Again, tho distance prevents frequent practising. Many would go ofton to a near rifle ran go who fannot find time for tho present ono. The journoy there and buck, and tho firing, must use up thvoo hours at the least. If wo can get no other range tho prosent inconvenient one must do ; but in tho side gullies of Polhill's Gully I could select two excellent ranges. These ■would bo closo at hand, and out of tho way, another advantage not to bo despised. I would recommond the officers of our volunteers to go about prospecting for ranges. — I am, &c, Bll'iE, April 27th, 1871.
