. — «. Independent Office, Saturday evening. The election for Superintendent, although marked by the absence of all excitement, together with the bad weather of the early part of the week, have interfered considerably with all business operations. Times continue as dull as ever, nor is there any alteration to report in prices, ',tho few transactions that have come under our notice serving only as indications of the total absence of all speculative feeling. Flour laggingly sustains the advance we noticed last week, although stocks must be low, and dealers chow no disposition to operate. Sales of Canterbury flour have been made at £13 5s to £13 10s per ton. Oats hang henvily on importers hands in spite of the inducement of low prices and may be quoted at 2s 9d to 23 lOd per bushel for first-rate samples of new. Barley is in no demand for malting feeding sorts being worth 2s 3d to 2s Gd per bushel, with little inquiry. Chick wheat saleable at 2a to 2s 6d per bushel. Canterbury.— The " Lyttelton Times" of the 22nd reports': — Holders of stored samples of wheat will not accept less than 4s Gd, which ha& been paid in several instances, while for forward delivery we now quote 4s 2d to 4s 3d. Flour remains in good request for local purposes at £13. The demand for oats is fully 9UBtaine<3, and heavy parcels change bands daily ; bright potato outs are fetching in store 2s 3£d to 2s 4£d, and for future delivery 2s 2d to 2s 3d is noted. Recently Tartarian have not been commanding so much notice, although no actual alteration has taken place in price. Stored linns aye offering from 2s to 2s Id, and for farmers' parcels Is lOd up to 2s in the market value. Barley remains in the flame position aa noted in last week's report. Good bright malting samples are scarce at 3s 6d ; medium ditto, 2a 6d'to 2s lOd, while inferior ranges from Is 9<t to 2s 3d. Owing to small supplies of stout held, quotations fov favorite brands have advanced to 12s, and even aa high as 12? 6d up to 12a 9d has been given for quarts ; stout in pints is less saleable at 7s 3d to 7s Gd. Flour is nominal at £14 15s to £15. Wheat, 6s 6d is asked for Adelaide, while Ga 3d to Gs 4d would do for Port MacDonnell. Oats are very quiet. Quo. tafions range from J3s 4d to 3s 7d. Maizo is still in a most unsettled condition, and great difficulty is experienced in making sales, ior ! good samples 3s lOd can yet be obtained. There was a fair attendance of the trade, but the biddings were not animuted, ahd the prices realised barely support yesterday's quotations. A good deal ■ of activity is reported in teas. Further considerable sales of the Galilee's shipment of congous ore reported to have taken place. Some 450 half chests, ex Isabella Brown, fine medium congous have also been taken up at full rates.
