Mr Gladstone scouted the report that the United States had offered to purchase British America. The Emperor and Moltke were desirous of gratifying the soldiers by a march through Paris. The Crown Prince and Bismarck opposed it. Greece. — The Greek legislature granted £10,000 to Mrs Lloyd, Spain. — The husband of ex-Queen Isabella has taken the oath of allegiance. Circumstances connected with the assassination of Prim are discovered. Queen Isabella is implicated. Italy. — The Senate voted to transfer the capital to Rome, Several European Cabinets advise delay in transferring the Royal residence to Rome till after the Pope's depth. There is a Catholic negotiation to transfer the Holy See to Belgium, also for an armed intervention on behalf of the Pope. Commercial. — Exports for the last month are the lightest on record. Trade prospects nevertheless favorable. New Zealand decrease, £12,540. Colonul Securities. — New Zealand fives, 1891, 99^ ; ditto to sixes, 1891, March, Sept., 109k Money Market. — Considerable outflow of gold, but money abundant at discounts 2£ to 3. German and French loans in active demand. Numerous mercantile failures. Wool Kepoiit. —The tone of sales is animated. Superior commands an advance of l£d and 2d. The opening of communication with the Continent will increase the demand. It is expected 150,000 to 180,000 bales will arrive in time for the next sales in April, and prices will relapse. Ceylos.-— Galle, March 22nd. — Communication between Singapore and Batavia is interrupted. The barque Palmerston, from London to Colombo, was wrecked in the late gale. Sir William Grey is to be Governor of Bengal. Gold and coal has been found at Mysore. The Indian income tax is reduced 10s. The revenue still shows surplus. Bombay, March 10th. — Australian coals are firm at 20 rupees. At Calcutta not one ship disengaged ; freight very hi#h. Madras. — Freights are scarce. Hongkong, March 7th. — Australian coul sold at eight to nine dollars ; demands light ; prices falling ; freights steady. Foo Chow. — The North Star sailed with 73,000 lbs of tea for Melbourne. Shipments to the colonies this season are 20 per cent less than during the previous season.
