FREIGHT.
John F. Lincke, shipbroker, reports in the " Trade Review " the following as the rates now offering in London :— Wool, clean, |d per lb; wheat and tallow, 355; and ground bark, 40s per ton of 2240 lbs ; measurement goods, 30s to 35s per ton of 40 cubic feet. From Newcastle, N.S.W. to Hong Kong, 253 ; Shanghai, 36s : San Francisco, 30s ; Galle, 20s ; Java, M-s; Manila, nominal; Singapore, 18s; Honolulu, 20s per ton. Tho following engagements, which have taken place during the month, will amply show the state of the freight market :— From Newcastle to Hong Kong, British ship City of Agra, 1073 tons register, at 28s per ton ; N. G. barque Mikado, 302 tons register, at 28s per ton ; with option to send her to Saigon at 18s per ton. From Newcastle to Saigon, Frcnsh barquo Agrieola, 342 tons register, 22s per ton. From Newcastle to Shanghai, British ship Thermoyplce, 946 tons registered, at 37s per ton with ordinary days for discharging; hut, if the vessel is despatched within fourteen days, a reduction of Is per ton to take place. N. G. brig Peter, 246 tons register, at 36s per ton. From Newcastle to Manilla, British barque William Clowes, 560 tons register, at 20s per ton, and back to Melbourne with sugar, at 40s per ton. We, learn from the " Westport Times" of Tuesday last, that the Harbormaster at Westport, Captain Leach had received instructions from tho Nolson Government to examine into and report upon the navigability of the Buller, Lyell and lnangahua rivers, and to suggest the best method, if any, in which the navigation of these streams may be improved. Captain Leach commenced his up-river journey on last Monday, by boat for the purpose of carrying out his instructions.
