WAIRARAPA
[From our Own Coeuespondent.]
THE EXTORT MEAT COMPANY.
This is now the topic of the day, the question of the Superhstendency sinking into insignificance before it. The whole of the shares would have been taken up by this time if the question where tho head quarters were to be fixed could have been amicably agreed upon. A much larger number of shares would be taken up in the valley if the head quarters were to be fixed at Tauhenikau ;on the other hand the large number of shares tsiken by those interested in having it at the Hutt would be thrown up if the head quarters were to be fixed in the Wairarapa. The cost of carriage and the convenience of the West Coast are the arguments relied on by the Hutt advocates. Tho Upper Hutt has tho buildings aud the steam engine for meat preserving ; and the Wairarapa the buildings and all the necessary machinery for boiling-down, which all agree is essentially necessary in connection with a meat-pre-serving establishment. The advocates for the Wairarapa urge that paddocks are cheaper here than at the Hutt, while the Hutt advocates reply that Mr Barton will let a paddock of 100 acres, substantially fenced, at a lower figure than one could be obtained here. The Wairarapians urge that the loss of weight in travelling is equal to 81bs daily, and the time and cost of driving would more than counterbalance the advantages of cheaper carriage. I have been asked by the advocates of both places to support their view of the subject ; but I have thought it best to give the arguments urged by both sides, and to then leave the decision to the public. BALLS. A select ball is shortly to take place at the Town Hall under the superinten- ! dence of Mr Marriott. The first of I this season's bread-and-butter balls will also come off at the same place at an early day, of which due notice will be given. CARTERTON HOAD DISTRICT.
