Election Notice. IN Pursuance of fche Regulation of Elections Act, 1870, 1, JAMES COUTTS CRAWFORD, Principal Returning Officer for the Electoral District of the province of Wellington, do hereby give notice that, by virtue of a Writ bearing date the 27th day of March, 1871, under the Public Seal of the colony, an Election will bo held for tho rotum of a qualified person to serve as Superintendent for the said province, and that the nomination of candidates will take placo at the Resident Magistrate's Courthouse, Wellington, at NOON on the 6th day of APRIL, and that the poll (if necessary), will bo taken on the 20th day of APRIL, 1871. TO THE ELECTORS OF WELLINGTON. /"Gentlemen — At the request of a numevJT rous body of Electors, I beg to offer myself as a candidate for your suffrages. Having had nearly forty (40) years Colonial experience, the last twenty (20) ]f which have been of a political character ; but since the establishment of Provincialism I have seen nothing but a retrogade movement, false hopes and bitter disappointments. I therefore feel sure that Provincial Institutions have but a limited existence— " As we have sown, so wo must reap." However, I hope it is not too late to mend. I will try my best, if elected, by first reducing the Superintendent's salary to £500 per annum ; also the others so far as will bo consistent with the public weal I shall endeavor to work in unison with the General Government. I shall encourage settlement by every means in my power. Ist, by disposing of land on deferred payments; 2nd, granting easy equiiable leases ; and 3rJ, by exchanging land for labor expended on roadß, &c, &c. I shall give encouragement to flax companies, and small grants of land whevo water power can be had to woollen manufactories, and also to potters where suitable clay can be obtained. I am inclined to assist tho immigration of artizans of every class who arc likely to develop the resources of our Province by manufactories, &c. The Railway, Patent Slip, (or Dry Dock), schemes shall receive my cordial support. I am for extension and invigoration of the trade of the Province, which may be calculated to widen the means of production, thus endeavoring to replace the loss occasioned by previous errors in administration. I shall be guided in all matters by the Provincial Council. In conclusion, I beg to say I will do my best with an equal and impartial hand, and my past life will be the surest guarantee.
