Another telegram states :— -Mail just in. Au extra states that the new mail contract has failed. This is quite untrue. The service commences, I think, this month. The terms are most advantageous for New Zealand, independent of subsidy from the States. . . Shooting for Ladies' Prize to-day (17th). The ball was a great success. This is the first day of the route via Cambridge and Tauranga. It is, I think, now regularly established. The Luna is coming round to this side. She is not yet in. Another dated Auckland 17th says : — This new line via Cambridge is a great improvement, being about half the length of the Ohinemuri one, and passing through the country of natives, who though lately hostile, have completely turned round within the last few weeks, and have besn erecting telegraph poles, taking road contracts, and supplying timber for brMging the Waikato. There is therefore a reasonable hope that this line may be permanently kept open and that we may at no distant date expect to *cc the missing link in our chain from the Bluff to Auckland supplied.
