Oun readers will be startled on reading in our telegraphic columns that Major Finnimoro intends standing for the Superintendency. We had lately occasion to compliment him on his maiden speech in the Provincial Council. We gave him credit for the good he gave promise of, but we cannot commend him either for modesty or good sense in aspiring to be the elected Jiead of the province. For the reins of Government to be placed in the hands of this daring Phsethon is a little too ridiculous! The telegram we may explain comes from our usual correspondent : otherwise we should have treated it as a canard. For never was there a time so critical in the history of, the piovince; never did she require in a Superintendent more} poll-
tical sagacity and experience, and more weight in the councils of the colony. In the coming session Wellington will have a hard battle to fight, and Mr Fitzherbert at the head of the provincial representatives will have a prestige in the House to which no other man in the province can pretend. With no knowledge of public affairs, no political experience, no colonial prestige, and not even a seat in the Assembly, Mr Finnimore has every conceivable disqualification for the office, without one single claim from past political services to recommend him. He may be able gallantly to head a detachment of cavalry, but any attempt on his part to head a government must be a miserable failure. We cannot understand what the people of Wanganui are about. Are they lost to all sense, or are they only perpetrating a very foolish practical joke ? We hope Mr Finnirnore will not allow it to be carried on any further. It has already gone far enough.
