Mailler appeared a reluctant witness, but all he denied is that he told Hay that he opened Hu turn's telegram and inserted above signature the latest news. He admitted that he got from information in " Argus" office the chief item, (" France a republic") of third edition of " Argus," not then printed ; and that he gave that and about " Napoleon being a prisoner" to the operator at the Bluff on a slip of paper with Hutton's message ; which latter was for Independent. Mailler admitted that he meant the news for general information, but says that he did not specially declare it was for In- | dependent. He says that when h9 j handed the papers to the operator, he did not expressly say to whom they were to be sent. Of course the operator thought both were for Independent, and made one message. Mailler would not swear that he did not tell Lemon that he (Mailler) had a pecuniary claim on Independent for the latest information.
