INDUSTRIAL EXHIBITION AT SAN FRANCISCO.
■»» _ The following circular is gdated San Francisco, Nov. 14, 1870 :-— The Board oi: Managers of the Eighth Industrial Exhibition of the Mechanics' Institute announce that on the second Tuesday in August, 1871, there will be opened in the pavilion of the Mechanics' Institute, in the City of San Francisco, California, an Industrial Exhibition, to which the people of Australia and 'fl&.v Zealand are especially invited to send articles for exhibition and competition. The eetablishmeet of regular lines of steamship communication between the ports of California and Australia bring these two countries into regular and close communication; and San Francisco, situated on the highway between Europe and Australia, must necessarily command an international trade of considerable magnitude,
The forthcoming exhibition will give an opportunity for the manufacturers and producers in Australia to lay before the United States, especially of its western border, the products of their enterprise and skill, and thus open up a new and congenial market which will be of benefit to all concerned. The industrial exhibitions at California, held under the auspices of the Mechanics' Institute, in the city of San Francisco, during the years 1857, 1858, 1861, 1804, 1805, 1808, and 1569, have drawn hither visitors from all parts of the world. The Exhibition of 1871 will combine the experience of. the preceding ones, and has the endorsement of the state Legislature, which at its last session made an appropriation, as an extra inducement for exhibitors to compete. The present exhibition building, which is being remodelled and arranged, will contain an area of 120,000 feet, and is unsurpassed in its appointments and conveniences. The light during the day is excellent ; and being lighted up during the evening by 1500 gas jets, and having perfect and thorough ventilation, which, together with a bund of fifty pieces of music, the gay throng of cosmopolitan visitors, the brilliant display of articles of richness and beauty from aH parts of the world, the cooling influence of numerous fountains — completes a picture difficult to surpass, but incidental to the objects to be attained. To the citizens of Australia particularly, this Exhibition, coming so soon after the inauguration of steam communication between the two countries, is of peculiar interest, and it is desirable that we should know each other better, so that, commercially, we may hereafter have greater identical interests. From San Francisco, by railway, the transit to New York is made in six days ; thence, to Europe, nine days — so that those who design visiting the United States, or Europe, should do so during the time of the forthcoming Exhibition. J Application for space to exhibit will be received until the 15th day of July next. It is desirable that these applications should come in as early as possible, so that the articles may be properly classed and apportioned. The Exhibition will continue open about four weeks. Kules governing the Exhibition are annexed. There is no charge or fees of any kind to place goods on exhibition, and every facility will be extended to exhibitors by the board of managers to carry out their wishes. All goods intended for exhibition and competition mii6t be consigned to " Eighth Industrial Exhibition, care of H. C. Kibbe, Corresponding Secretary, Mechanics' Institute, San Francisco, California," and must Toe accompanied by circular certificate and duplicate invoice, and bills of lading, in the usual manner. The invoice must be endorsed whether the goods are to be exhibited and returned or sold, or to remain in the United States. It is expected that the arrangements will be made with the steamship companies to transport goods intended to be exhibited and returned, free of charge. In all cases where articles to be exhibited are intended to be sold or allowed to remain in the United States, freights and duties must be paid. The Mechanics' Institute will not hold itself responsible to pay any charges on goods consigned to it other th an the cost of transporting from the steamship wharf to the Exhibition building and back. Duty will not be charged on goods intended for exhibition and to be returned. All communications should be addressed to H. C. Kibbe, corresponding secretary, Mechanics' Institute, San Francisco, California, who will furnish all desired information, rules, lists of premiums, &c The board of managers would request all parties interested, especially the public press, to extend the courtesy of making the foregoing facts known to all concerned.
