MR TRAYERS AND THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT.
* The 'following letter has been handed te us for publication : — Taita, Hutfc, Feb. 8, 1871. Sib,— ln the Independent of the 7th inat, you publish my name as the person " whom Mr Travers gives you aB his authority for. the very strong language he has been reported to have used against the Provincial Government." Now I beg moat distinctly to deny having kpoken to Mr Travera on the eubjeefc, and of this I am the more positive, inasmuch a« I have never spoken to him upon any subject whatever; and unless there is some mistake, it is a downright fabrication. I think I have cause to complain that you have published my name as the author of this charge against the Government (without referring to me) while I am quite innocent of it, and as I have no am* bition to be made a scapeco^t in the matter, I hope you will give my reply the same publicity. — I have, &c, Stephen Judd, Chairman, Western Hutt District Road Board. Mr A. F. Halcombe.
