TO THK EDITOR OF THE INDEPENDENT. Provincial Trensury, Wellington, January 30, 1871. Sib,— As lam obliged to proceed to Nelson to-day, on private business, and the public would probably form a wrong conclusion were I to remain silent in reference to a charge of " embezzlerae»t" and " larceny" made by Mr Travera, againsb the Provincial Government at a public meeting last Saturday week, I have to request you to publish the following correspondence, to which, notwithstanding his distinct promise to give me the information asked for, Mr Travers has made no reply. — I am, &o. A. FOLLBTT HaLOOMBE. Provincial Treasurer. Wellington, January 24, 1871. SIE, — I have the honor to call your attentontion to the following enclosed extract of the report of a speech delivered by you ab a public meeting, held in this town on the 21st instant. While giving an unqualified denial to the allegations contained in that statement, I have, at the same time! to request that I may be furnished ,with the name of" the chairman of a Road $oard" to whom you refer as your authority, in order that I may bo able to give an explicit and public contradiction to the charge of felonious conduct and larceny which you have been pleased on an exparte statement to make against the Provincial Government. I have, &c, A. FOLMJTT HaICOMBE, Provincial Secretary and Treasurer. W. L. Travers, Wellington. Extract from a speech delivered by Mr Truvers, as reported in the " Evening Post" of the 24th January, 1871 : — 11 With regard to provincialism, he had been that day told a fact which was characteristic of the system. A chairman of a road board had told him that a considerable time ago his district had paid into the Provincial Treasury a sum of money on the understanding that it would be supplemsnted from the provincial funds ; instead of this being done, the Provincial Government had fltuok to the money, and would not even pay the original sun). "This, in a private person would be termed embezzlement, and if done by any individual would place him in a felon's' dock. He would gi7e the name of the district to the Provincial Secretary, or any othpr person authorised by the Government to demand it. Hepredicted that the Munuwiilu lnnd would be jobbed away, and said that he thought the Queen's wharf and tbo revenue derived irom it should be handed over to the city authorities." Provincial Treasury, Wellington, January 27th, 1871. Sib, — I have the honor to direct your attention to my communication, No.7-7l|Of the 24th inst, and to request the favor of a reply. — I have, &o, A. FOLLKTT HaLCOMBB, Provincial Treasurer. W. L. Travers, Esq, Wellington.
