The numbers were— Richardson, 234 ; Wynn Williams, 214. Donedin, Thursday. The libel case against the editor of the " Times " came on to-day, and has been adjourned for a week. The proprietary repudiate all responsibility of the articles. A man named McLoer has been drowned in the Molyneux, through temporary insanity. Reid is a candidate for the Assembly for the Jaieri. At the Waikouaiti nomination, Hutcheson and McLean were proposed. The poll will be taken on Wednesday. The news of theTnvercargill nominations came to hand to-day. The candidates are — Calder, Lumsden, and McClure. McClure withdrew, stating that his views were substantially those held by Lumsden. Galder reiterated his expressions of opinion. Lumsden said he was in favor of the Government scheme as proposed. For Calder, 24 hauds ; for Lumsden, 14. A poll was demanded for Lumsden. A close contest is expected. Denison, for Mataura, addressed a meeting last night, and opposed the Government scheme. A motion in his favor was carried against an amendment not to express an opinion till Dillon Bell is heard from. Considerable interests is taken in election matters. Invercargill, Thursday. At the nomiuation for the Assembly to-day three candidates — Calder, Lumsden, and M'Clure — wore proposed ; but the latter has since withdrawn. The poll takes place on Tuesday, Calder is in favor of a modified scheme. Lumsden supports the Government policy. Nelson, Thursday. Sir D. Monro addressed the electors at Motueka last night, The meeting was very large. He criticised unsparingly the government policy of finance and protection. The meeting carried a resolution all but unanimously in favor of Sir David's candidature Mr Shephard addressed the city electors the same evening and greatly disappointed his 4 friends who complain that he was not outspoken enough. He will give a qualified support to the government. He will be opposed if an eligible candidate can be found. Napier, Thursday. Mr M'Lean was re-elected to the House of representatives for Napier today, without opposition. Auckland, via the Thames, January 17. Sales of Mauritius sugars took place to-day, ex Annie Brown. White fetched four pence to fourpence three-sixteenths. Brown's yellow, twopence one-eighth to threepence fifteen-sixteenths. The Wild Duck from the Fijis, while at Santo, a boat containing the trading master (Morrison), and two of the crew, Irvin and Winter, went ashore; 150 natives attacked and murdered the party, who were unarmed. They tried to board the vessel, but failed in consequence of the wind springing up. The Council has voted £20,000 for the Kaipara railway. Waikato advices state thatParris told the natives that the Government would not fight' about the murder of Todd. Arrived — Rangatira, Clyde from Fijis. ! Sailed — the Go Ahead, for Napier, and the Kiwi for Fiji.
