TEE PRICE OF MILK AND OTHER THINGS.
« i (to the editor op the independent.) Sib, — I should like to know why I have to pay sixpence for a quart of milk when butter sells at eightponco per Ib. I never knew such a proportion of the ono to the other anywhere else in the colonies or at home. I should like to know^ if the City Council are going to establish a weighing machine, as I am positive it does not take twenty cwt of coals here to make a ton. My loaf i 9 often short weight, and co is my beef, what can I do? A cabman charged mo five shillings the other day for taking me and my box less than a mile, aud when I asked his number ho laughed in my face. I looked round all the cab for his printed rules aud fares, but could see nothing. I can seldom get a cab when I wish it, as I do not know any place where thoy ore obliged to aland. Stagnant water gathers all round my house, but the Inspector of Nuisances passes it every day and Bays nothing. I have been advised to give him in charge, but being a lone widow woman with a small family Ido not like to go to the Oonrfc. Oould you do anything to stop those horses from galloping up and down the street ; my heart has been in my mouthjmany a time, as " woo Davie" is often in the street. I came up lately from Otago, and the thing would not be allowed in the smallest town there. I wish to send ray eldest son to the High School, but I will have to pay more than twice what I paid in Dunedin for five masters for what, three masters teach hero. Ib there no chance of getting a good education cheap in Wellington ? I enclose my address. I declare I feel better already after having expressed, these complaints. You will print my name as Widow Maghreb,
