CITY COUNCIL.
* The usual weekly meeting of tho members of the City Council was held at their offices yesterday afternoon. Present : — Councillors Plimmer, Carpenter, Miller, Mills, Quin, Kainie, Moss, Borlase. His Worship the Mayor presided. WATER SUPPLY. His Worship the Mayor said before proceeding with the business of the sitting he wished to inform tho Council thafc Mr Marchant was then j preparing all the necessary data to enable them to get a bill passed through the House next session for providing fcbe city wifch water. The preliminary expenses already incurred amounted to £10 or £15 and were going on ; and thafc fche probable cosfc would be something like £50 or £60 before all the neoesssry details were ready. ME BECK'S AGREEMENT. Mr Brandon waited on the Council on behalf of Mr Beck, who was also present, in reference to the agreement; between him and the Ceuncil respecting the transfer of water pipes. The Surveyor read the memo of agreement that had. been entered into by the committee and Mr Beck. His Worship said fchafc the sub-committee were empowered to close the matter up, and thafc it must be referred to them, which would be done without any unnecessary delay. Mr Brandon -was of the opinion thafc in order fco render fche contract valid it should be advertised for ©ig_fc clays. The majority of the Counoil were of fche opinion that the matter was a simple purchase, and not to be regarded as a contvact ; but ib was decided to consider the suggestion of Mr Brandon. THORNDON POUND. The question oi accepting Councillor Carpenter's gratuitous offer to the Counoil of a piece of substantially fenced ground was postponed till nexfc meeting — Councillor Carpenter, in the meantime to make enquiries as to whafc terms a man could be found fco acfc as poundkeeper. LEGAL OPINION. Councillor Moss again drew the attention of Council to fche necessity for coming to some definite understanding as fco taking legal advice. To be considered. EEGULATIONS. A greafc number of clauses of parts 9 and 10, schedule 13, were considered and passed. HAWKEEB' LIOENBES. At this stage of the proceedings, a petition from thirty dealers of the city against hawkers selling without; license, was read. Councillor Carpentor contended thafc a distinction should bo made between producers, who sold the produce of their own industry, and fche middle men who purchased to sell again. He thought ib would be unfair to ask a license from a man who caught his own fißh or grew his own cabbage, beforo he was enabled to sell fchem. Councillor Borlase pointed oufc that no restriction was imposed on producers selling their articles, but directly they began to hawk them aboufc fche town they entered into compefcifcion with dealers who had to pay both license and other town taxes, and should in thafc case be liable to a tax. To be further considered when regulations were pa.sed. KENT TEERAOE. The balance of £24, duo on the 'contract for Kent terrace, was passed. PINANCIAL. The bank account was stated to be overdrawn £43 18a 5d ; and since last meeting the sum of £94 14s ld had been paid. BROUGHAM BTEEET. A petition from certain ratepayers of Brougham streefc, asking fchafc a special rate of sixpence in the pound be levied on several town acres fronting on that 6fcreefc, waa read. Ordered to be considered after further information had beon ascertained. A LATE TENDER. His Worship fche Mayor drew attention to the fact that a tender from Mr -Revans, for the supply of timber, had been received after a tender had been accepted. The tender was not read. VEHICLES ON THE "WHARF. Councillor- Moss wished to know if the Council had any power over vehicles frequenting the wharf on tho arrival of steamers, aud .often endangering the lives of the people. Ifc was thought the Council had no control in the matter. LAMPS AND LAMPPOSTS. • A letter was received from the Gas Company, accompanied wifch a specimen book of lamps and lamp-posts, and offering on receiving fche sanction of the Council, fco send home for whafc lamps they mighfc requiro free of charge. It; was agreed fco advertise for eighfc days for fcho supply of lamps, and intimating that the design could be seen afc the offices of the .Council. LAYING GAS-PIPEB Another letter was received from the Gas Company giving notice fchafc, according fco clause 6 of fche Gas Companies Acfc, their manager would, on behalf of the company, commence the
work of opening up the streets for tho purpose of laying the main pipes on the 18th inßfc. The streets to be first; commenced on to be Manners street, Willis sfcreefc, Lambton Quay, and parfc of Molesworth street;. The Surveyor was instructed to communicate wifch the Manager of the Gas Company. The meeting fchen adjourned to that day fortnight;.
